Heart "Felt" thanks......
Hi Carol,
Just wanted to say thanks for the felt workshop. I really enjoyed it and it has inspired me to pick up a needle and thread and become creative again.
I thought you might like a photo of my hearts – I finished them off this afternoon (photo attached)
Hope to see you again when you do the felt landscapes.

Exciting Times !
There is a chinese curse "may you live in exciting times", I reckon that just about sums up the last month at NMO.
We've had the birthday party, Heritage Day at St James, Sheepdog Trials, Rehang, Made in New Mills and not to mention the small issue of a workshop renovation!
Quarterly newsletters will restart soon, so this is by the way of a catch up until then.
Heritage Open Day at St James
This was a real success in partnership with the people at St James, NMO provided a treasure hunt using photographs of key features in the church, and art activites based on the architecture and decorations. We had lots of interest, with enthusiastic children using stencils to make their own cards and tissue paper stained glass. We are back at the church the first weekend of December for the Inspired exhibition where NMO members can sell their work that has been inspired by St James's.
Sheepdog Trials
Well it was cold and wet on the Saturday but great fun. As ever Jo had boundless enthusiasm and kept our spirits up when all you could hear was the sound of rain on the tent! None the less some sales were made and NMO made its mark, we were by far the most impressive stall in the craft tent and our hand made goods stood out against the mass produced items on neighbouring tables.
On Sunday the show was cancelled for safety reasons, this was a real disappointment but that's the way it goes if you take part in a country show in september and the venue is less than level.
Thanks to the efforts of those who came out on Sunday, including two of Jo's house guests, we were all back at the gallery by midday, safe and sound if a little damp .
Rehang
We have already given an update on this but it is worth saying again the gallery looks fantastic. If you haven't been in yet where have you been!
Made in New Mills
Yet again a success, NMO members wherever you looked, and refreshments served with a Scandanavian flair. The venue was delightful and it had a good feel to it all, friendly and festive.
Refurbishments
Stage one complete - we have lighting that works.
Next steps - doors into the workshop, these will significantly improve not only the appearance of the back shop/workshop area but reduce the arctic winds that blow through.
The floor is being levelled and we plan to put in a proper sink and kitchen, a members seating area, heating, and draught proofing.
So keep looking through the window to the workshop and see the transformation in progress.
As with renovations at home the interim stages can be messy, so don't be disheartened if the view through the workshop shows a work in progress - we will get there.
Workshop programme
Thanks to all those who contributed to the current programme, it has now been printed and copies are in the gallery and we have emailed our ever expanding contacts list.
As we have put in the programme notes this is not a final closed programme, we will add courses throughout the year so if you have any ideas let us know.
So after all that I'm surprised that that anyone is still standing.
We have achieved a fantastic amount of good stuff in a very short time, so lets all give ourselves a pat on the back for achieving far more than anyone thought we ever would.
If this is our quiet period up to Christmas I'm going to have to start taking extra vitamins to keep up!
Extra ! Extra!
Oh I forgot to add as well as everything else going on in September members submitted new work, sold a respectable amount, covered front of house, and contributed items for the Flower Festival at St George's.
At the flower festival the NMO display - masterminded by Anna and Angela - was highly praised, a real achievement since they didnt get access to the venue till really late before the opening.
So once again a busy month.
If anyone hs any photographs of events they would like to share please send them, it would be nice to build up a photo record of our achievements.
Oh and on the subject of photographs I was stitiched up by my fellow directors into attending the cheque presentation by the New Mills Parade Committee, not so bad you might think. They didnt tell me I would have to make a speech and be photographed holding a very big toytown cheque. Nice trick guys.
We came away with a cheque for £70 to fund more leaflets so a good result but not a good photo!
Joy

Bright Beginnings
In this brave New Year, you need to know that there is more original work to be enjoyed at New Mills Original. This is a gallery with a difference, a community showcase for a widening range of creative work by local artists.
Paintings by nine year old Lily-Mae Hudson figured – and sold – in the Gallery’s opening exhibition, and were followed by mosaics by guest artist Diana Storey. Now, four months on, nine drawings and paintings of imaginative liveliness (could these be future illustrators of children’s books?) are on display until 28th February. The artists are sisters: Rose Bartels, 9 years, and Polly Bartels, 7 years (pictured). Come and enjoy Whale and Mermaid, and Animal Pantomime. Ever seen that sort of Sausage Dog before? The gallery is open every day, so drop in to discover for yourself the sisters’ other delights. And to see what can be achieved by and for artists, young and older, in a community that encourages and celebrates creative work in and around New Mills.
